The South Brunswick baseball team lost one game by one run and another by three runs in games last week.
North 2, South 1
North Brunswick scored an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth inning in the victory March 25 in Leland.
The Scorpions scored on a walk, a steal, a bunt and an outfielder’s error.
South scored its run with one out in the top of the fourth. With South trailing 1-0, Wyatt Clewis reached on an infield single and Grady Sotriffer singled to left field. Gavin Templeman doubled to right field, tying the score 1-1. South later had the bases loaded but two strikeouts ended the inning.
North scored its other run in the bottom of the third. A leadoff single and steal put a runner on second. After the runner advanced to third on a groundout, the run scored on a two-out single.
South freshman Liam Edmonds pitched six innings, giving up five hits in six innings. He struck out six and walked one.
North’s junior pitchers Dylan Stacks and Tyler Kelly held the Cougars to four hits and struck out nine in seven innings. One batter was hit and none was walked.
North is 2-3 in the conference, 5-6 overall.
Ashley 6, South 3
Tanner Berry, who has signed with UNC Greensboro, hit a three-run home run in the top of the fourth inning that gave the Screaming Eagles a 4-0 lead and senior Cane Mehling hit a two-run home in the top of the seventh inning that gave Ashley a 6-3 lead in the victory for unbeaten Eagles, the top-rated 4A team in the state.
South scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on a hit by Gavin Templeman.
South’s other run was scored in the bottom of the fifth and cut the lead to 4-3. With one out, Camden Pszczultkoski was safe on a fielder’s choice. Harrison Mears singled to left field. With runners on third and second, Wyatt Clewis walked and an errant pickoff at third allowed the run to score.
Winning pitcher Jackson Lee, who has signed with UNCW, gave up four hits in six innings. He walked five and struck out nine.
The Screaming Eagles are 6-0, 13-0. South is 1-5, 3-9.
