Charles Meyer Gym in Scottsburg, known as “The Pressure Cooker,” played host to a different style of competition than it normally would when it hosted the Mid-Southern Conference wrestling championships on Saturday.
Corydon Central had the best showing amongst the seven teams that fielded grapplers, posting a cumulative score of 222.5 to win the MSC title for the second time during the past three seasons. Defending champion Charlestown finished runner-up with 210 points, while Salem was third with 178.5.
The Panthers’ Jayden Owsley had an easy road to the championship match at 120, advancing on a pair of forfeit victories. In his only match of the day, he defeated Salem’s Brayden Walters via 18-3 technical fall to capture his fourth MSC title.
Luke Enlow followed at 132, earning a forfeit victory before pinning North Harrison’s Daniel Stiner in 3:13. In the championship match, he pinned Charlestown’s Lucas Love in 3:25 to win gold for the Panthers.
Six Panthers earned runner-up honors, starting with Klyde Ortiz at 113. After advancing to the championship round via forfeits, he was pinned by Charlestown’s J.C. Lowery in 40 seconds to earn silver.
At 126, Wyatt Schreck pinned Silver Creek’s Hunter Murray in 1:22 in the semifinals before getting pinned by Salem’s Dylan Walters in 1:21 in the championship match.
At 144, Leo Garcia punched his ticket to the championship round with a 15-0 technical fall over Eastern (Pekin)’s Lucas Langley before getting pinned in 2:38 by Charlestown’s Josh Latiolais.
James Miller started his day at 150 by pinning Scottsburg’s Gavin Curley in 1:04 before doing the same to Silver Creek’s Miles Harris in 5:17. In the championship round, he dropped a tight 2-1 decision to Charlestown’s Christian Grayson.
At 175, Evan Haag made it to the championship round with pin-fall victories over Eastern (Pekin)’s Gabe White (1:40) and Salem’s Brady Briscoe (2:32). His day ended by getting pinned in 3:26 by Silver Creek’s Seamus McBride.
The final runner-up for the Panthers was Dylan Gentry at 190, who won a 4-1 decision over Salem’s Logan Dent to punch his ticket to the championship match. Facing Charlestown’s Jordan Guerrero, he was pinned in 5:13.
At 106, Ian Owsley advanced to the semifinals via forfeit before dropping a 7-4 decision to Charlestown’s Elijah Shantz. Two more forfeit victories allowed him to finish third.
At 285, Jeremy Coverdale made it to the semifinals via forfeit before getting pinned in 29 seconds by North Harrison’s Andrew Holzknecht. He bounced back with a pin-fall victory over Salem’s Austin Reynolds in 2:05 before winning a 15-2 major decision over Scottsburg’s Josue Telles to finish third.
Drake Ditto was the first of four fourth-place finishers for the Panthers at 138, earning a first-round bye before getting pinned by Silver Creek’s Elijah Johnson in 59 seconds. After pinning North Harrison’s Maverick Von Allmen in 2:57, he was pinned by Salem’s Jonah Morgan in 1:45.
At 157, Dane Naiman was pinned by Scottsburg’s Cole Salkeld in 3:17 to start his day. After advancing in the consolation bracket via forfeit, he pinned Charlestown’s Jackson Broady in 2:17 but was pinned Salkeld once again, this time in 1:22, to finish fourth.
Jonas Sutton’s day at 165 began with a 3:31 pin-fall victory over Salem’s Brandon Cornwell before getting pinned in 5:52 by Eastern (Pekin)’s Colton Pickerill. He then bested North Harrison’s Cooper Radcliff with a 17-1 technical fall before Cornwell got revenge in the third-place match, pinning Sutton in 1:43.
At 215, Zayven Kalisz advanced to the semifinals via forfeit before getting pinned by North Harrison’s Elio Hernandez in 4:33. After pinning Scottsburg’s Clinton Stice in 1:16, he was pinned by Silver Creek’s Gabe Wheatley in 2:19 to finish in fourth place.
North Harrison placed sixth in the event with a score of 88. Andrew Holzknecht had the best showing for the Cougars, getting quick pin-fall victories over Silver Creek’s Taylor Baker (0:22), Corydon Central’s Jeremy Coverdale (0:29) and Charlestown’s Kyle Cook (0:35) to earn the MSC title at 285.
Elio Hernandez followed at 215, pinning Charlestown’s Kaleb Bohannon (1:57) and Corydon Central’s Zayven Kalisz (4:33) before getting pinned by Salem’s Noah Daulton in 1:32 to finish runner-up.
At 157, Charles White also earned a pair of pin-fall victories, defeating Eastern (Pekin)’s Eric Myers (0:39) and Charlestown’s Jackson Broady (1:01). In the championship match, he dropped a 7-3 decision to Salem’s D.J. Ward to finish second.
Daniel Stiner earned a first-round bye at 132 before getting pinned in 3:13 by Corydon Central’s Luke Enlow. He bounced back with a 13-2 major decision over Scottsburg’s Logan Salkeld before pinning Eastern (Pekin)’s Colin Jones in 2:12 to take third place.
The Cougars’ final placer came courtesy of Sullivan Bray at 126, who started his day with a forfeit victory before getting pinned by Salem’s Dylan Walters in 51 seconds. After pinning Charlestown’s Colton Smith in 1:30 to advance to the third-place match, he was pinned by Silver Creek’s Hunter Murray in 1:46 to finish fourth.
Corydon Central and North Harrison will begin post-season competition on Saturday when they travel to Johnson Arena in Jeffersonville for the Indiana High School Athletic Association sectional starting at 9 a.m.
